  • * Lynchland revisited. Duality as a source of "the uncanny" in films directed by David Lynch emerged from my doctoral thesis, defended at the University of Gdańsk in July 2010 and concluded four years of extensive doctoral research conducted both in Poland and the USA. The work examines how Lynch's films embody and explore the concept of the uncanny, as theorized by Sigmund Freud, through various manifestations of duality: the fear stemming from distorted realities, the presence of "Doppelgängers", the dual nature of human consciousness, and the dissolution of boundaries between dreams and wakefulness.
  • * Through close examination of Lynch' films, this study demonstrates how his artistic vision generates an atmosphere of unease, exposing fears buried in the human psyche and how it might resonate with its recipients. It also investigates how the motif of the double accompanies identity formation and how it might generate various forms of rebellion - from childhood defiance to existential questioning.
  • * This research reveals that duality in Lynch's work functions as a gateway to the subconscious. His films draw viewers into a world where reality shifts and internal truths surface, making duality central to his storytelling approach.
